About Dmitry: Dmitry is the Owner of Storm Group Roofing, a Minneapolis based roofing company:
Many have asked what shingles I recommend or don’t recommend.
If you on a market for a new roof my top three asphalt roofing shingles will come from CertainTeed Roofing, Owens Corning Roofing and Atlas Roofing Corporation
All shingle manufacturers had warranty claims but they handled them and honored/paid out claims.
On other side second grade shingles will look the same but perform very differently. Second grade, or builder grade shingles for me are coming from Tamko Roofing ID, IKO Roofing and few other brands.
Best and worst shingles difference
If you're looking for a contractor, be careful with those who will install anything and tell you that all shingles are the same.
In this video, Dmitry answers the big question: What are the best and worst roofing shingles?

I’ve had problems with oc duration shingles looking like the tamcos in the video and also had some where every other shingles was about 3/8 short
This is the reason I don’t install GAF. Over-priced for mid-tier product. And a terrible company to deal with on top of that.
@Roofing Insights much less asphalt compared to similarly priced competing products. Customer service has been very hit-or-miss especially for warranty issues. And as far as top certifications, master elite is a joke. Qualification requirements don’t hold a candle to select shingle Master or platinum preferred. If you can’t qualify for either of those, You might still be able to get master elite.
What made you to come up with that conclusion?
For all roofing corporate lawyers: if you even planning to sue us about this video: we can’t loose and you can’t win. Bring it on. Stop bulling and start taking care of your second grade quality.
Yes!
Yea, you corporate lawyers can get stuffed! C’mon out to the job, get up on the roofs with us….and oh yea, bring a parachute!
Within the top three brands–Certainteed, Atlas, and Owens Corning, there are also different series. Would you please recommend the best shingle series of each brand, plus a high-quality underlayment and ice & water shield? Thank you for the informative videos.
Great suggestion! We already did in 2020 roofing shingle guide!
I am currently shopping around for materials and roofers for a roof replacement and your video was the best I’ve seen after 3 hours of you tube surfing and browsing on both topics. You are very knowledgeable and give excellent information average people, like me, can understand. Thank you so much!
@roofing insights thanks for the videos. What is the opinion for OC Oakridge roofing system?
Absolutely!!! We have really good company who came to our class. Text me your info: 612-558-4881, Dmitry
@Roofing Insights You can do that!? We are in an hour south of Atlanta, GA
What city are you in? Do you want us to recommend you a contractor?
Certainteed is good I’ve only had a couple blow offs and I believe the lumber yard sold me some sort of seconds didnt seal wtf
I have a Certainteed roof and has been nothing but problems since it was new. They never sealed and flop up and down in moderate wind. Had to replace a bunch too. Got 3 tabs blown off right now.
The top of the shingle is a factory edge, simply ensure the underlay is perfectly straight matching the underlay with the plywood creases. Applying each shingle individually with two hands eliminates imperfections and mistakes appearing from gauging.
Hoooold up….yes, “all manufacturers had Class Actions against them” *however* Owens Corning was rejected in court, they never got charged/filed suit whereas other brands were.
Malarkey didn’t have class action, Atlas performed way better than OC, and OC did pay out class actions…
I recently started my roofing and siding contractor business. I love that valuable educational experience and information. Thanks for making this kind of videos. I am keep watching your other videos.
Glad it was helpful! We have way more business tips and deeper content in roofing-school.com
I used to work for malarkey, and what I was told that from years back they had one of their competitors came in to see how malarkey was mixing their coating and rubberized materials, and turned around just to steal the formula compounds and tweeked it in their own ways…needless to say malarkey won’t and will not be doing that again. They got it locked under lock and keys..
I’m guessing GAF Timberline doesn’t want to be mentioned…correct?
Some roofers on my area PUSH for GAF, the GAF complete certified system $$$$$$$
Wow. so my roofer representative just dropped off Tamko sample and told me how good it would look on my house.. She is a shingle expert.. Now I am wondering about her.. but surely not using Tamko .
Tamko is the worst option today. Not only because of the shingle but what’s going on with brand. Just some insider information from your insights.
The real test is after the sun adheres them , then how hard is it to separate them????
Great video! Could you recommend installers in the West Palm Beach Fl, area for certified installers of the top 3 brands. Thanks
Yes, please text Dmitry your info: 612-558-4881
Thank you for the great information. Wish you looked after roofs here where I live because I would have loved to have you do our roof. Hope we can find someone with your expertise and dedication to the job. My mom was one of the unfortunate ones to have IKO aristocrat organic shingles put on her roof. They were 25 year shingles and after 2 years they were already having issues. The roof was a mess after 10 years so it will have to be redone already. We learned that you should do your research before getting the job done. Don’t trust the roofing companies to have the expertise because many aren’t dedicated to their craft as you are. Thank you so much for the video!
I rely on internet tutorials to become a smarter consumer and Roofing Insight “knocks it out of the park” for providing volumes of information in their field of expertise! Thank you.
Who would you recommend for installing one of your top 3 in Spring Hill/Brooksville, Florida? It is about 1 hour north of Tampa.

I am in the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Market or Region 1. Does anyone know anything about GAF Timberline roofing shingles? Is this the best shingle for the market or Region 1? Do they stand behind their warranties? When a son or a daughter inherits a house from their parents is the warranty still honored or voided?
How is this guy going to judge shingles when it doesn’t matter anyway because they won’t be warranted because you can’t nail 30 yr shingles on that pitch!!! Too flat under 5/12 = ????? leaky roof lol
I myself use OC. Isn’t Malarkey one of the good ones or maybe your comparing the lower priced shingles. Malarkey Legasy is up there in price.
we also use OC we dont have atlas where I live but we think the only ones that people should use is Certainteed and OC the other options are IKO and BP GAF is also out here but know one really stocks them
