The Malarkey Highlander has been a great choice in quality for the homeowner and for the crew when applying. Master Certified with Malarkey gets a transferable 40- year warranty. Awesome video! You convinced me to go with Architectural shingles after roof damage from hurricane Zeta. Question please: I’m selling my home in 5 years and want a dark roof so it doesn’t look dirty come selling time. My home is red brick. Can you please recommend a dark color that goes well with red brick but still shows off the Arch shingles? Thanks again for your outstanding info!

I love the way a black roof looks on a red brick home. You’ll still be able to see the architectural design. My house way red brick before I painted the brick and I have black GAF Timberline HD shingles installed on my place.

      Glad you enjoyed the video!

Warranties a most often than not crap thats just msrketing. You always have to fight uphill to get something covered unless its a home depot socket exchange or a harbor freight tool return ?

Hi, your video was very helpful and thorough, but I was hoping you can answer a question about whether it’s recommended to install an underlayment (ie. synthetic felt) more or less for architectural shingles vs 3 Tab or its equally recommended for both. I live in the Toronto area and the winters are a consideration.

    1. Digital Roofing Innovations

Susan, underlayment, where it be tar paper or synthetic is a heavily debated topic. I would recommend putting it down, but I know many contractors don’t do that in Canada on very steep roofs.

We have always installed it, but it’s more of a secondary barrier if your roof is torn off due to wind than anything else.

So one comment I will make.

Where I live, you’re required by code to install 130mph shingles. There are only 2 3-Tab shingles that can be installed due to this limit, Malarkey Alaskan being the most popular.
However, most high end architectural shingles can exceed this. In some nearby cities, they go as high as 150mph requirements, which only a select few architectural shingles can manage.

Hey thanks! I’m going to be purchasing all materials for a mansard roof and the contractor doing the job asked specifically for “dimensional shingles ‘ I’m assuming architectural shingles are the same?

Are Architectural shingles more energy efficient than 3-Tab shingles? I read, “Architectural shingles are engineered to remain cooler than traditional shingles by offering greater light deflection. They also provide added insulation, which reduces heat transference between your home and the outdoors, resulting in lower heating and cooling bills.” I lived in both a homes with Architectural and 3-Tab shingles. From personal experience I would say the architectural was cooler. However, my experience is limited and I would like to get your point of view. Thanks.

I wish I could add a picture but what would cause parts of arch shingles to start falling where it looks like pieces of some of the squares are hanging by one corner? We have about 35-40 like this so far. Roof was put on in September 2020.
