Roofing insights or roofing bias? Do you happen to be a Owens corning preferred contractor? After working 32 years for one of the largest roofing companies in New England that’s been in business for over 80 years I felt compelled to leave a comment. I can’t speak for dynasty malarkey or vanguard products because they aren’t available in this area but To rank Owens Corning above Certainteed is absurd! Let alone IKO. Owens corning is a consumer grade shingle that can be purchased at the big box Lowe’s. I won’t even bother getting into all the issues I’ve seen with Owens corning and IKO shingles. And anyone contractor using Tamko in my opinion should be locked up. Ask any respectable contractor in North America and they will tell you Certainteed is top notch and far above the rest. The regular landmark good. landmark pro very good, landmark TL & landmark Stonegate The absolute best of the best.

@Roofing Insights Hmmm, depends on who they polled. If it was 10,000 fly by night contractors or home owners, might not be such a great result from the poll. If the poll included the top 1% highest rated contractors in America, I would trust that kind of poll. I know nothing of roofing materials but a LOT about marketing and research. I got 5 bids from super high-rated contractors. However, half use GAF, half use Certainteed. Trying to see which is better from the material perspective.

I totally agree. Owen Corning was a poor shingle mfg. from the first day they started taking over outdated shingle plants and using fiberglass matts. As far as I am concerned they never have and never will make a good shingle.

Color doesn’t fall off a new shingle. A new job will have loose granular laying all over it and the first rain will rinse them off. But your question is impossible to happen on a NEW roof.

    1. Jay Perry

Yeah, I think nailing flange and granular lost should be more weighted in the total, as they are big issues that the companies don’t end up covering, and you end up fighting with them to get no where.

Done probably more important but it’s good to see how they perform against each other. Like: heaviest might not be the most expensive, and might hold granules better VS lighter can be more expensive and lose more granules or vice versa. Once you know the total rating you look at categories little different but have to be objective before you arrive there

Thank you for this video, I live in Canada and I have to do my roof again after 18 years. The contractor was using the IKO shingles on my roof and I was told that the product has 25 years of warranty, however the shingles on the sunny side started to fall apart already after 18 years. I have contacted IKO and they are offering me the warranty reimbursement. My question is what is the normal lifespan for the shingles in general?
